GMYC sailors claim 3 of the top 5 positions at this past weekend’s Green Pond Regatta in Anderson, SC this past Saturday. Ted Bogardus and Tim Owens claimed the 4th and 5th positions respectively and Jake Kohl won the event over local Green Pond sailors Nigel Pitt (2nd) and Neil McGrath (3rd). New GMYC member, Rick Richardson, joined his first regatta in several years and was quickly getting his new (and beautifully constructed) boat tuned in and improving his racing result steadily throughout the day. Neil McGrath’s / Green Pond’s facilities and hospitality proved outstanding and though we had a few moments of “hold your breath” light air sailing, most of the day provided a perfect 5 to 8 knots of breeze with gentle shifts and pressure changes for very tactical sailing. Click to see detailed RESULTS.

The Greenville Model Yacht Club had a great sailing afternoon at what appears to have become our new home lake this past Saturday. Seven Seawinds, one Nirvana, and one US 1 meter showed up at roughly 11 am and we got in 6 or 7 races (I lost count!). Though we certainly will next time, we weren’t keeping a formal score this weekend. However, the lead was usually tightly contested by all – but through shear will, Jim (Anderson, SC) and Tim (Greenville, SC) found themselves at the front in nearly every race. Dan W. had some radio problems leaving him rudderless at one point and the dingy was called into action to safely retrieve him. Dan just let us know that he ordered one of the newly discovered “Hobby King” 2.4Ghz radios that can be had for $29 WITH a receiver (www.hobbyking.com)! Shipping charges are reportedly a little high, but it still comes out to less than the price of a typical receiver alone. We’ll keep you posted on Dan’s progress with the new radio. Also of interest Ted Bogardus (Greenville, SC) sailed a borrowed Seawind and had such a great time that he ordered a Seawind kit as soon as he got home! We hope to get Ted on the water with his new boat in short order.

The new lake showed promise for good breeze and although the wind wasn’t from a more typical (and usually more consistent) direction, we did have a generous 8 to 10 knots that would typically shift through about 10 degrees. We’re all pretty excited about the momentum that is building in Greenville and we’re working to schedule our next event and establish a regular outing period. We hope all of you can join us soon to experience our new lake – we’ll keep you posted

Best Regards,
